Phlebectomy: Technical Steps with Jose I. Almeida, MD, FACS, RPVI, RVT

June 2022

Phlebectomy is "the most important thing we do."

In South Florida, where vascular surgeon Dr. Jose Almeida practices, folks are fond of showing their legs. "And when people come in with bumps on their legs, they want the bumps gone," said Almeida, MD, FACS, RPVI, RVT. "For me, phlebectomy is the most effective way to do this."

Dr. Almeida presented Phlebectomy: Technical Steps at a recent International Vein Congress. During the session-which is available in VeinGlobal.com-he shared how phlebectomy is "the most important procedure we do." It's simple, it's inexpensive, it's long-established, "and it works."

He walked the audience through the steps of phlebectomy: pre-op marking while the patient is standing; local anesthesia, perhaps with conscious sedation to make tumescent placement easier; an incision with a knife, needle, or other instrument; hooking and elevation of the vein; avulsion with minimal manipulation of the skin or incision site to reduce hyperpigmentation; and dressing.
